Book Review: Half Bad by Sally Green

Book Review: Half Bad by Sally Green

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book in the Half Bad series. Having watched the TV show beforehand, I was eager to see what would happen next in the story, especially after the cliffhanger ending. However, the book surprised me in the best way possible.

The exclusion of numerous characters from the show only added to the intrigue of the book, making it a completely different and exciting experience. The plot was gripping, filled with unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating what would happen next. The world-building was exceptional, with a unique take on the concept of witches and their society.

The protagonist is well-developed, and you understand what leads him to every decision, making him easy to relate to and empathize with. The writing style was captivating, immediately immersing me in the mind of the main character, Nathan, and his way of life. I felt like I had known him forever as we went through his relationships and his reality.

One of the most significant aspects of Half Bad was its exploration of themes of discrimination and prejudice. The book delves into the idea of "pure" and "half" witches, with the latter seen as inferior and often mistreated. This added a layer of depth to the story, making it more than just a typical fantasy novel.

The relationships between the characters were also a highlight of the book. Nathan and his sister Jessica's bond was disarming, and I was invested in their resolution throughout the book. The slow-burn romance between Nathan and Annalise was well-done, making their eventual relationship all the more satisfying.

Overall, Half Bad is a fantastic read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy or YA fiction. With its compelling story, well-developed characters, and excellent world-building, this book is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. I am eagerly looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see where the story goes from here.
